چکیده

Introduction: The Phoenix Mars Lander 2007 mission will carry three identical calibration targets to verify and validate the preflight calibration of the Surface Stereo Imager (SSI) and to monitor the stability of this calibration during the mission. The specially designed calibration targets (‘the caltargets’) are at least in one respect more advanced than calibration targets on earlier missions, as they contain magnets. The caltarget is an aluminum plate with six different color chips each in two sizes and with additionally four experimental color chips. The pigments for the first set of chips consist of inorganic pigment material dispersed in silicone RTV material and they are green (chromium oxide), yellow (goethite), blue (cobalt aluminate). The second set of chips is three shades of gray (mixture of titanium dioxide and carbon black, reflectivity: 60%, 40%, 20%).

Reproducing Meteorological Observations at the Mars Phoenix Lander Site Using the Nasa Ames

The mission began in late Spring (L s ~77˚) and ended in midSummer (L s ~148˚), lasting for 151 sols [2]. In situ measurements by the lander characterized the local atmospheric conditions (i.e. temperature, pressure, wind speeds and direction, opacity of dust and water ice, and the detection of surface water ice frost) [3,4]. Phoenix measured a steady decline in near surface atmospheric pressur...

Onboard Calibration Silicate Targets for the Chemcam Libs Instrument (msl Rover)

Introduction: To be launched in 2011, the ChemCam (Chemistry Camera) instrument suite will provide remote sensing for the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover [1, 2]. ChemCam consists of a laserinduced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) instrument and a remote micro-imager to supply close-up context images of the LIBS analysis spots [1]. The laser spot radius will be between 60 and 200 μm at distance...

A Revised Target Calibration Procedure for Imager for Mars Pathfinder and Surface Stereo Imager for Mars Polar Lander Datasets

Introduction: The Imager for Mars Pathfinder (IMP) returned over 16,000 high-quality images from the surface of Mars in 1997. The Surface Stereo Imager (SSI), a near duplicate of IMP on the Mars Polar Lander, will acquire images near the South Pole of Mars beginning December 3, 1999. Most scientific analyses of these datasets require some level of calibration , either into radiance units, or in...

Rover-Based Surface and Subsurface Modeling for Planetary Exploration

We develop and test a technique for the creation of coupled surface and subsurface models. Images from a stereo camera are used to estimate the motion of a rover that is collecting ground penetrating radar (GPR) data. The motion estimate and raw sensor data are used to build two novel data products: (1) A threedimensional, photorealistic surface model coupled with a ribbon of GPR data, and (2) ...

How ’ s the Weather on Mars ? Simulations are critical for calibration of instruments as well as fast and accurate interpretation of data from the Phoenix

Because Mars is the planet closest to Earth, it has been host to numerous interplanetary missions. The Phoenix Mars mission was designed to study the history of water and habitability potential in Martian arctic ice-rich soil. As the Phoenix Mars spacecraft landed on the Martian surface in May 2008, communications stopped during the switch to orbiter relay. Two hours later, a sigh of relief eru...
